Nancy Huyck - Principal

HUYCK ARCHITECTS, founded by a father-daughter team, combines passion for architecture with structural integrity.

Nancy Huyck grew up working in her father’s firm, Richard J. Huyck & Associates – Architects, Engineers. This firm focused primarily on large industrial projects such as paper mills and food processing plants. A Berkeley graduate in engineering, both an architect and structural engineer, Richard emphasized structure as an art form – the details often manifesting themselves before the general layout was apparent. Engineering systems were integrated into this initial design.

After graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Nancy spent four years working in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was exposed to a variety of construction and building types. Prior to the establishment of Huyck Architects, she started her own architectural practice, in Aptos, to focus on residential and small commercial projects. Her goal is always that of simplicity; distilling the design to its greatest efficiency.

All projects, both residential and commercial, start with a site study, a client wish list, and a client construction budget, whether it is an ADU, remodel, addition, or new custom building. Each project morphs from preliminary design sketch options through to the final phase of design and permit issuance. When requested, on-site review of construction is provided to assure that the project reflects the design intentions.

Most all projects are driven by the client’s vision, with the architect usually providing multiple options along the way. Huyck Architects is easy to work with but direct, educating clients as necessary to meet budget constraints, structural efficiencies, code requirements, and all those items which make a project run smoothly.
